After the death of her father in Iraq, Christine moves to Porter Mines with her mother to start a new life. Something else has been on the island for far longer than man has inhabited the earth. Something that has been feeding on the garrison since their arrival. The Gathering (Novel): The small town of Hardmans Crossing is dying. In the sixties a fire in shaft Nine of the deep coal mine on Hardmans ridge put an abrupt end to its prosperity. Turning the ridge into an alien landscape of stunted, twisted trees where noxious vapors escape from beneath the ground. Thrust into the spotlight after an image of Jesus upon the cross appears atop the church steeple of Hardmans Crossing's only church, main street is revived as the faithful flow into town to worship. But what at first appears to be a sign of the second coming is in reality just another trick by an evil presence that has inhabited this valley long before man walked upright. Planning and notes.
